Praise in Public, Correct in Private: The Mentor’s Guiding Principle

Posted on 8 June 202518 June 2025 by Mark Kern

Mentorship is more than guidance—it’s about building trust, fostering confidence, and empowering others to grow. One of the most impactful ways to support mentees is by embracing the principle of praise in public, correct in private. When done right, it creates an environment where learning flourishes, mistakes are embraced as growth opportunities, and mentees feel truly valued.

Celebrating Wins in Public

Recognition is a powerful motivator. A well-timed word of praise can fuel a mentee’s confidence and encourage continuous improvement. Public praise in mentorship:

  • Strengthens Belief in Oneself – When a mentor acknowledges a mentee’s efforts or achievements, it reinforces their confidence in their own abilities.
  • Encourages Peer Learning – Sharing praise openly not only boosts the individual but also inspires others within a team or community to strive for growth.
  • Builds a Positive Mentorship Culture – Highlighting successes cultivates an environment where progress is celebrated, making mentees feel valued and motivated.

Private Corrections: A Space for Growth

Mistakes are inevitable, but the way they’re addressed determines whether they lead to growth or discouragement. Correcting mentees privately:

  • Protects Their Confidence – Public mistakes can feel overwhelming. A private conversation allows mentees to reflect and improve without embarrassment.
  • Promotes Honest Dialogue – One-on-one discussions foster openness and create a safe space for mentees to ask questions and receive constructive feedback.
  • Encourages Resilience – When corrections are framed as learning moments rather than failures, mentees develop the mindset to tackle challenges with confidence.

The Mentor’s Role

A mentor’s influence goes beyond knowledge-sharing—it’s about shaping mindsets, instilling confidence, and helping mentees navigate their journey with strength and resilience. By praising publicly and correcting privately, mentors create a supportive atmosphere where mistakes are embraced as stepping stones rather than setbacks.

Mentorship is not just about guiding—it’s about lifting others up while ensuring they have the space to grow. When done with care and intention, this approach leads to confident, motivated mentees who feel empowered to achieve their full potential.
